The U.S. gained control of the San Pedro area in 1848 after defeating Mexico in the Mexican-American War. It was then that the harbor was improved and expanded, becoming one of the country's largest ports of service, and is still considered one of the busiest today. The Navy took control of the area in 1888, and made it an official Fort in 1914. During World War I it became a coastal defense area and housed a major naval base. The number of warships expanded in 1931, to include 14 battleships, 2 aircraft carriers, 14 cruisers and 16 support ships. They all sailed to Hawaii for an exercise in 1940 in an effort to deter Japanese aggression during World War II, but were caught in the attack on Pearl Harbor, after which the battle fleet never returned to San Pedro. However, the area was used for Navy ships as a port of call, through the end of the war.¹

Groups are nine weeks in length and are age-specific, so mourners can get support from others their age. Grief is experienced together in a warm, caring environment. Family Services and Assistance Programs

Many homeless and displaced children and families in the San Pedro area need a safe, clean place to live. Rainbow Services is one of many non-profit organizations in the area that provide the housing and support services that families need to get back on their feet. Rainbow operates two shelters - one 30-day emergency shelter and another long-term shelter where families can stay for up to a year. Rainbow also offers many support services, including parenting and life-skills classes, and programs specifically for children, such as arts and crafts, reading and math development, and social skills.
