If you addicted to a substance or are a substance abuser (abusers outnumber those who are addicted) and are ready to get treatment I can help.My approach is multifaceted and developed for each client individually.

Addiction Counseling is examined by evaluating consequences of use, patterns of use, triggers, relapses, and developing a relapse prevention plan. I adapt a philosophy that clients are unique, experts on their lives, have strengths, and resources to contribute to their treatment process. I evaluate the level of motivation for change and the clients cognitive ability, which would determine my approach to therapy. I may use CBT, Solution Focused, Narrative, or Family Systems therapy. The processing of therapy is systematic in exploring clients' support network, such as employment, AA/NA community, Church, family involvement, and/or other community group.

Clients will be empowered to face their addictions with the resolve to stop their cycle. They will explore the contributing factors of their addictive behavior and how that behavior affects their lifestyle. They will be able to utilize their insight and understanding in counseling in order to make daily decisions that reverse the cycle of their addictive behaviors. Clients will not only be empowered to face their fears behind their addictions, but also to take ownership of their goal setting and their results with confidence.

Nathan has extensive experience in the field of addiction and trauma recovery and has completed training for certification as a Certified Trauma Therapist. He also has personal experience with combating addiction and trauma together as a multiplied force, and processing the trauma that underlies and fuels addiction. He will provide support in a safe and encouraging environment, and will utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to your specific needs in order to help you claim progress in your efforts to heal and recover from addiction and trauma.

I do not offer detox services. However, I do offer one-on-one supportive outpatient therapy and individual IOP in a private atmosphere that encourages each client to move to the next-lower level of support and regain personal autonomy. Frequently, I see clients who do not wish to participate in 12-step programs. For them, I create individualized programs based on the principles of SMART Recovery and Life Ring Recovery, which address underlying problems, such as anger. In addition, I am a U.S. Dept. of Transportation Certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).

I believe that the notion of "addictive personalities" is nonsense. There are important differences between drug addiction and so-called internet addiction, for example. I know that addictions arise for many reasons, and that we may never understand most of those reasons. Happily, people can and do overcome addictions without having to understand all of its mysterious causes. 12-step programs are popular, but I reject the idea that we must surrender control of our behavior to a higher power in order to solve these problems. Building solutions for addictions is not very different from building solutions to other problems. We need only use our existing strengths in ways that make sense.
