Brandon is located on the western side of the state of Florida, between Tampa and Plant City, with a population around 90,000. Brandon experiences hot and humid summers, with daily thunderstorms. The Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office (DACCO) is one of the largest community based providers of substance abuse rehabilitation services in the state of Florida, and their Brandon chapter provides prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services for adults and adolescents.2 The Brandon office also handles assessments. DACCO strives to educate the community on the dangers of substance use, prescription medication abuse, the risk of addiction, and the mental and physical toll these behaviors can take on individuals and their community alike. In these cases, a support group can help provide solidarity and encouragement in a non-judgmental, understanding atmosphere. The National Alliance on Mental Illness holds a family support group for caregivers, family, and friends of those suffering from mental illness.3 The group meets at the First United Methodist Church on the third Thursday of each month. Current Initiatives
The Greater Brandon Ecumenical Ministries (GBEM) is an outreach program developed in partnership by a number of community organizations. Through partnering with faith-based and secular social service providers alike, GBEM is dedicated to reducing the problems associated with homelessness in Brandon.4 Their program, I Am Hope Café, provides food, clothing, temporary housing, and medical services to those in Brandon without homes.5 The Café program is open for visitors on Saturdays at the Brandon Church of the Nazarene in Brandon.
