I try to create a space which is welcoming and kid-friendly. Children communicate best through play and it's through play therapy that children's emotions are fully expressed. I am board certified by The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the sub-specialty of child and adolescent psychiatry. Therefore, I am well qualified to treat the delicate needs of young children in the counseling process. The type of therapy I use heavily depends on the age of the child. Play therapy is often used for young children (5 and under), and children-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT, mindfulness and relaxation techniques are used for older children (6 and older). Children experience many different stages of life but may not be able to express their feeling due to fear, not feeling comfortable, respect or not wanting to anger loved ones. Many times children can internalise their feelings. This can cause them to act up in their adolescent, teen and adult years. Unpacking feelings in a safe space and addressing them can help them heal, process and thrive.

At this point in my professional life as a psychologist I no longer directly work with young children. However, I do work with the children's parents in order to assist them in meeting the multiple challenges which can be present in a marriage, which in turn can have an effect, not only on the emotional well-being of the children, but on themselves as well.

I work with children and adolescents ages 6-18. My approach is to let them participate in their therapy, so that they have a sense of control, and not that something is "being done to them." Every child is different, so my approach depends on their personality and behavior. With quiet, or defiant children, I may start by playing a board game or doing puzzles so we can get to know each other. With a more outgoing or verbal kid, they may have a lot to tell me and just want to talk. Still others respond to workbook exercises which I provide feedback on.
