I work with children and adolescents ages 6-18. My approach is to let them participate in their therapy, so that they have a sense of control, and not that something is "being done to them." Every child is different, so my approach depends on their personality and behavior. With quiet, or defiant children, I may start by playing a board game or doing puzzles so we can get to know each other. With a more outgoing or verbal kid, they may have a lot to tell me and just want to talk. Still others respond to workbook exercises which I provide feedback on. At this point in my professional life as a psychologist I no longer directly work with young children. However, I do work with the children's parents in order to assist them in meeting the multiple challenges which can be present in a marriage, which in turn can have an effect, not only on the emotional well-being of the children, but on themselves as well.

Children respond to sincerity positively. They also seem to be able to sense love. A 6 year old child recently drew a picture of me saying "I love you". Now I never told this child I loved her and I was working with her mother to increase structure in the home but she sensed this and responded to it. Her behavior improved after 3 sessions. Some children bear burdens that they should never have to bear at such a young age. One of my specializations is doing TFCBT with children.
