Depression is one of the most difficult problems to treat in psychotherapy. Many times, a client may be too depressed to do the things that would help him/her feel better. When treating depressed clients, I take a detailed history to fully understand the timing and onset of depressive symptoms or episodes. Often, understanding the trigger behind a depressive episode can be helpful in fostering self-compassion in the client. We will also discuss and try to manage or change current stressors that are maintaining the depression. I recommend personalized self-care behaviors that have a positive effect on mood. Social support and social interaction are also recommended to combat isolation.
