Children need a solid, constant source of care. Therapy can help the child express their emotions and deal with any disorder(s) they may have. It also brings the issues to the attention of the parents so they can better deal with the situation and make more time for their child. If you are not able to help, a therapist can be very effective at finding out what is troubling your child and help them deal with their emotions.

My approach to counseling with children is to work collaboratively with the parents. counseling with children is part of a family systems approach. Children do not develop struggles in a vacuum so working with the parents and the rest of the family as needed is of added benefit to the child in therapy, regardless of the age of the minor child involved. Therapy may be weekly or every other week, as needed and determined when we develop the treatment plan.

Children often express their experiences and feelings through play, and this becomes an important tool for learning about themselves and others. Children often express and resolve inner conflicts through their play. The therapist helps the child to express and understand the world through play activities - sometimes acting out conflicts and feelings, then interpreting (as appropriate to age) how a similar issue or feeling is present in the child's life.

Our time together is an opportunity to explore strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and desires. Together, we will work to process aspects of your life that may be causing discomfort, frustration, anxiety, depression, or even simply an overall feeling of being overwhelmed.
