My approach to helping those struggling with depression is to offer a supportive environment of acceptance where one feels free to share their pain. I primarily use a Cognitive/Behavioral approach. In this approach I work with my clients to help them learn how to increase activities that have given them joy, such as calling a love one on the phone, going on a walk or bike ride in nature and decrease activities that make depression worse such as substance use or watching too much TV. I also collaborate with my clients to help them identify and challenge their automatic negative thoughts about themselves, and replace those negative thoughts with positive and adaptive thoughts and beliefs.

If you are coming to counseling because you feel lonely or discouraged, we will look at the possible causes for your depression and help you to address those underlying issues. Many times depression might be the result of past trauma, abuse, or loss of a loved one. In other cases, depression comes because of general life dissatisfaction, broken relationships, job stress or unfulfilled expectations. We will help you to not only uncover those reasons but also resolve them and build skills to discover your unique design and purpose, establish healthy relationships, set realistic goals and build a real sense of significance into your life.

Depression is hard. There is nothing easy about it. It leaves you feeling blah, sad, unsure and unmotivated. Depression can come and go like a wave, or sometimes it stays around for awhile like a flood. Some people with depression require anti-depressants, some do not. The combination of therapy with an anti-depressant seems to be the best way to deal with depression. Please contact me to make an appointment.

Depression often has biological, emotional, and relational components to it. It is important to address all of those for maximum care. There are very practical ways to address the biological/physical manifestations of depression. Determining how the brain is involved in the depression is important. How the body is functioning plays a significant role. Emotionally, there may be experiences or dynamics that need to be sorted through by addressing how the past affects the present well-being, and the dynamics of how we relate to self and others, and the depression. Being connected in healthy relationships is also an important part of healing. We look at the whole picture in the process.

In working with depression I offer ways for you to understand the depression and the contributing factors. Together we identify those life factors that have caused the depression and find healthy ways to resolve it. We then reconstruct the thinking, attributes and behaviors associated with the depression. The purpose of this is to have you gain a sense of balance and control in your own life. We then create manageable coping skills that will allow you to identify the triggers and have a working plan to cope with the depression.

Most people, at some point in their lives, experience depression. Our lives become overwhelming to the point that even simple, every day tasks seem difficult to overcome. Counseling provides an outlet for people to express their hurts and pain, allows them to gain insight to where their particular cycle of depression stems from and helps them find a light and hope in an otherwise dark world.
