Dr. Sara Mandelbaum and Dr. Joel Stukalin are expert consultants for short-term interventions with families, specifically related to child-rearing & blended family issues. When conflict arises within the family system it can create severe distress. My approach to family therapy begins with developing an understanding of the needs of each individual and the family unit as a whole. Based on this formulation a practical treatment plan is developed, which enables the family to create a healthy dynamic where conflicts can be resolved and a mutual understanding of the various perspectives of each family member can be recognized.

Keeping the family strong means that you have a strong support system around you. I work with the family to help members better understand the system that they have created, how it is functioning, and how it is serving them. The goal is to understand the system by assessing its strengths and weaknesses to better use it to support and sustain its members.

Do you find that emotional boundaries in your family are oftentimes trespassed? That is, are there those who do not respect the physical and psychological privacy of other family members? (This sometimes appears in the form of physical, verbal or sexual abuse.) Do you find that you seek to rescue or make excuses for other family members when they act irresponsibly or destructively? (This is called "enabling" or "co-dependency" and is very common in families with addiction.) If you are a parent, do you sometimes find yourself being disrespected by your children who look at you more as a peer than a parent? We are part of something larger than ourselves and that is why we tend to encounter difficulties in dealing with simple things in life such as learning how to live together, raising children or coping with adolescence. In Family Therapy, as opposed to Individual Therapy, we explore, understand and address issues family members present at their source. Emotional origins of personal conflicts get exposed throughout roles and dynamics; part of my work with families include to question and re-frame them to mobilize stagnation and create room for new experiences.

Family therapy is important when the members don't learn to listen to each other and make their thoughts and feelings known. We also must define which roles had been 'assigned' to each family member and how that may be unhealthy, dysfunctional, and does not serve each individual. This will help each other to understand how being cast into these roles do not work. More awareness of how each other feels, and not to cast on nto scapegoat, caretaker, victim persecutor, etc. Talking it out in therapy can stop unhealthy habits and to develop good ones.

Sometimes families have issues which cannot be resolved at home, but extend to other areas and are fed by the myriad ups and downs that individual members face on a day to day basis. I work to integrate my understanding with the reality and subtlety of a particular family dynamic, and propose methods of openness to draw bridges between thoughts, emotions, habits, and the familial outcomes that follow. Patience is crucial in this setting, and I provide a compass or starting point for what are often effective discussion between those who desire a more amiable family life.

Originally trained as a family therapist at the Family Institute of Cambridge, Mass., I have evolved as an experienced family therapist. I believe that family therapy is generally the treatment of choice in resolving issues and preventing the problem from going to the next generation. It is useful to see an entire family but can also be beneficial if parts of a family will work together to overcome communication problems, resentments, and misunderstandings that can tear families apart. I teach family members a skill called the Intentional Dialogue to help improve family communication.
