Losing someone or something you love is profoundly painful. One of the greatest myths we hear is that “time heals all wounds.” In reality, time often deepens the ache unless we give ourselves permission to grieve. Healing requires space to mourn, honor what has been lost, and gently begin to carry it in a new way. It is my privilege to walk alongside clients as they move through grief toward healing, meaning, and peace.

Personal loss such as a loved one or due to trauma needs to be mourned in order to move on in one's life. This difficult process requires a 'witness' to the emotional loss. Psychoanalysis serves the function of enabling a person to speak about the loss. It enables an individual to remember in a way that enhances the individual survivor.

All of us experience grief and loss in our lives. There is no escaping it. Unfortunately, there are many times that you will experience a loss that society does not sanction as "grief worthy." Loss of an early pregnancy, miscarriage, loss of a valued career or relationship, and the loss of a beloved pet often hit us hard, and result in feelings of grief. I listen with empathy and concern, and will assist you through the grieving process with sensitivity and support, while offering you effective ways of coping with your feelings.

The loss of an important person, can be a terrible shock. I help you with moving through the process of grieving, including issues of survivor guilt, anxiety and depression that may arise after a loss, whether it be loss of a person, job, or pet. When grief feels overwhelming, I can provide the support needed to find meaning in the past, and hope for the future.

Individuals struggling with grieving the loss of a loved one can learn how to cope and heal from these painful life experiences and ease the trauma of grief. EMDR can assist in helping to relieve suffering and allow the natural process of grief and mourning to continue in a healthy, adaptive way. Clients can reprocess distressing memories that may relate to grieving process.

The range and intensity of emotions experienced as a result of a significant loss often make the grieving person feel like they are going crazy. You need a non-judgemental place to process the loss and the effect it has had and is having on your life, and to talk about what you are experiencing. You need someone who understands the devastation and its profound impact on you and who can help you pick up the pieces and gradually begin to imagine the future in a different way.

I can help you learn how to manage and release the deep pain of grief and loss. Grief is a natural feeling that is a result of loving with all your heart. The loving action is to embrace your very difficult feelings and express the heartache you feel. I create a safe environment for you to go into these challenging feelings and learn how to let them go.

Grief is a process. Dr. Spada will stay with you throughout your process. Each individuals process is very different. Dr. Spada takes an individualized approach to grief work and will make sure she stays with you every step of they way. She will offer compassion, understanding and validation. During your time time of grief, Dr. Spada will provide you with tools and coping mechanisms to support you through your experience.

Grief and Loss Therapy will include: Utilizing tools to help navigate the emotional and psychological stress following a significant loss. Approach will be at individual's pace allowing for healing to begin. Experiencing a loss can be traumatic but together we will find a way to create a sense of peace. Using evidenced based practices will take place in sessions.

If it is a past loss we will talk about that relationship and what it meant to you, and see how that person affected you in your current life and what he/she meant to you. If it is a current or impending loss, we can focus on day-to-day issues to lessen anxiety, and process how to handle what time is left. Practical issues may be discussed. if you find yourself obsessing we will probably focus on feeling, if you find yourself lost in feeling, we may focus on verbalizing your thoughts and your feelings. If you are overwhelmed by depression and find it difficult to function, I will make recommendations for medications and/or alternative strategies.

Dr. Joel Stukalin and Dr. Sara Mandelbaum have guided many clients like you through their grieving processes. Since each client is special and unique, we work with the utmost sensitivity to help you during this emotional period so often filled with many memories and feelings. Some clients also experience unfinished emotional business with the deceased, which we work through with substantial empathic understanding and patience.
