Addiction can be a scary thing that is often surrounded by ambiguity and confusion: why do I continue to use when I know it is bad for me? Why do I want to use in the first place? Why can't I seem to stop using and why cant I change? In working with clients, step 1 of our work is figuring out the answers to these questions and figuring out why addiction occurs in the first place. After this, we explore tools, resources, and therapies that will best work for clients in helping them create the changes they need and to promote the lives they want.

Addictions can appear in many forms including substance addictions, internet addiction, sex addiction, gambling addiction, shopping addiction, pornography, social media, excessive exercise, food, etc. Strong cravings with a loss of control can lead people to become addicted in spite of possible dire consequences. Counselling is one of several possible treatments available for addictions. Individual, group and family therapies have been found to be helpful in order to inform a client regarding the harmful effects the addiction may have on themselves, their friends, family and society. Promoting physical, emotional and spiritual well being is often critical for the rehabilitation process.

People engage in addictive behaviours many reasons, and the context matters. I will meet you wherever you are at in your recovery, even if you are unsure if this is something you really want. We only work on reducing or eliminating a behaviour (such as using drugs) if you have identified reasons that it pulls you away from the type of life you want to live or the type of person you want to be. If that is the case, we’ll figure out what situations, emotions, thoughts, physical sensations, or other experiences hook you and control your behaviour in ways that you have identified are unhelpful. I will support you in unhooking from these experiences so that you can build a meaningful life.

"Addiction", whether it be over-using drugs, internet, sex, etc., is a means of seeking pleasure in order to mask difficult feelings and thoughts that you may be dealing with. Sometimes, the pain of difficult or traumatic experiences becomes so intense that we unknowingly turn to unhealthy means of gratification. It is my goal to collaboratively, delicately and thoughtfully explore the underlying reasons of your excessive use of drugs, internet, etc., and support the working through and acknowledgement of the feelings and thoughts associated with the underlying reasons. In my approach to addictions I work with clients to understand how the addiction may be helping them to cope and help them to learn alternate healthy coping mechanisms. Addressing related underlying issues may also be important in helping clients to leave the addiction behind. Although clients often find it difficult to let go of the addiction, they slowly feel ready as they begin to take steps and have more positive life experiences, which are also explored during therapy. Client strengths, motivations, hopes, and values are also considered and through these approaches clients begin to feel safe, satisfied, and happy living their life without the addiction.

My work with addictions has included providing therapy to individuals and couples who struggle with many life issues which has led to the development of alcohol, drugs, sex, or other types of addictions. My approach includes a thorough assessment, co-developing a treatment plan, and ways to help you become accountable and self-reliant. I believe in harm reduction as a focus toward developing a healthier lifestyle.
