Working with children is one of the most rewarding areas of my career. Parents often come to me asking me to help their children find their way in life, get along better with peers, focus/pay attention better, do better in school, and ensure their future success. In supporting children and youth through therapy, Nicole offers a unique approach to each child. Nicole is a Registered Social worker and a trained kids yoga instructor. Combining these specialties offers a unique opportunity to help children explore and understand their experience, feelings and emotions. Through body movement, play, art and other approaches, Nicole focuses on building a relationship of safety and trust with each child, understanding that this is key to supporting a child through therapy.

It can be especially scary when a child struggles, because it can be so hard for them to communicate and as adults, we often want to protect them from the things that can hurt them. On top of that, we know that the struggles of childhood can go on to affect adulthood. Fortunately, through different types of counselling, such as play therapy and attachment therapy, young children are often able to find a means of communication and are able to express themselves and their struggles.

Young children need an approach that is developmentally appropriate for them. We specialize in helping young children. Child centered play therapy helps children express and process their feelings and make changes. Creative therapy helps children express what they may have trouble verbalizing and also serves as a bridge to help children become more verbal. We partner with parents to construct an approach that is attune to where their child is at and what the needs are.

While I do not work with youth under the age of 16, our clinic has many child and family therapists who are availability to schedule a free consultation. Although I don't work directly with children, I do parent/parenting coaching, which I believe is the foundation in helping our kids grow well and healthy, with good self- esteem and confidence to handle this life. Children learn. They are watching and listening, even when we don't think they are. Ultimately, they will be mad at themselves before they'll be mad at you. Validation is the key to healthy, content, and confident children. I can help you get better at that.

A variety of approaches can be tailored to young children, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. This approach involves individual counselling as well as teaching young children skills such as managing and coping with emotions, interpersonal skills (dealing with others), tolerating emotional distress and managing attention.

My approach when working with children under 12 years old is to ensure that they are provided with a positive and safe experience of therapy. I prefer to tailor therapy to their developmental stage by creating a fun environment that may involve play, art, and activities during sessions. Discussions about their interests, skills, and special talents and abilities are at the forefront of our therapeutic conversations to help build confidence and feelings of positivity. My background in relational therapy may invite parents or siblings into sessions as well.
