We are all in relationships, and couples have a special connection. When that connection is not measuring up to what it is you as a couple have dreamed about, and worked toward, it can be very frustrating and disheartening. Social and family pressures can add other layers of difficulties. You will learn to unpack the reality of what has been going on for the two of you, and where differences in perspectives and goals can be understood. This can lead to a better way to communicate what is working, and where areas for improvement may be explored.

To break out of familiar dance steps, sometimes you need a skilled, non-judgmental, and uninvolved listening ear, and a place that is outside of your daily life. How do you change these steps or patterns? In Psychotherapy, we will take a number of different approaches, based on what you need and want, and factors such as how you learn and your skills and styles. We will identify what your patterns are, where they come from, and work on different strategies to help you learn new responses and options for living. Some of that work will be “here and now,” practical exercises and ideas you can use. Some of it will be through revisiting the past to see where you are stuck.

Our most intimate relationships are where we are often challenged the most to grow. Much of my work with couples is helping each person feel entitled to their feelings and feel able to advocate for their needs within the relationship. So often we have expectations of how our partner or spouse is supposed to be, how we are supposed to be with them and there are unspoken expectations to navigate between us. These assumptions can easily lead to very destructive patterns that we act out with the person we want to feel the closest to. Our work is to strengthen ourselves from the inside out so that we can meet our partner "full of ourselves" and then find ways to be together that are a win win!

What are the most common couples' issues? If you are thinking "communication, conflict, sex, money, child rearing" you are correct. However, most therapists will go after the symptom on each side of the couple fence thinking that the way to effective change is by getting each party to "work" on their respective "issue". Many times the parties don’t agree but comply. Imagine if you could align the unconscious brains of a couple and stop the "working on your issues" part that has become so popular in therapy settings?
