I think of addiction generally as a habit out of control. You can learn to change your habits and thus control your behavior. Of course some addictions are so out of control they require detox and residential treatment. That is not the kind of addictions I deal with. You can be addicted to anything: pornography, alcohol, drugs, sex, or even chocolate.

Escapism looks like a lot of things and can have a big impact on our lives. It can be overworking, procrastination, excessive drinking, drug use, and compulsive sexual behaviors. I've never met anyone who started using a substance because they wanted to be unable to live without it. Substance abuse and addiction start as a strategy. The strategy may be different for everyone but it begins to be THE strategy. The coping skill for unwanted emotions, for difficult times in our lives and even the way we celebrate the good times. Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model.
