Camas is a city in Clark County, Washington. With a population of 19,355, it is a relatively small city with the feel of a quaint small town. Officially incorporated on June 18, 1906, the city is named after the camas lily, a plant with an onion-like bulb prized by Native Americans who originally lived in the area. At the west end of downtown Camas is a large Georgia-Pacific paper-mill from which the high school teams get their name "the Papermakers".1
Mental Health in Camas
Camas has been ranked as one of the best places for seniors to live in the nation. The city's Gatekeeper program provides free training for community members regarding the warning signs of mental and physical illnesses in older adults. Gatekeepers then know how to respond when faced with an emergency situation involving an elderly person.2 Mental Health facilities are focused on elder care by emphasizing assistance for the elderly via the Area Agency on Aging & Disability of Southwest Washington. The agency believes each adult deserves to live with dignity. A broad spectrum of free resources are available to connect seniors, adults with disabilities and family caregivers to a full range services that improve the quality of life and maintain independence for older adults. Nutrition and wellness classes are offered, as are family caregiver support programs. Call 360-694-8144 to obtain more information.3
Current Initiatives
The Camas School District provides both special needs and gifted students with a variety of programs to support their academic, intellectual, social and emotional growth. Advanced programs are available at all grade levels in the district and provide highly capable students with opportunities to develop higher-ordered skills such as analysis and problem solving. Pre-AP programs in middle school and AP programs in high school offer highly rigorous studies to challenge even the most gifted students.4 The district's special services department is charged with providing educational support for children with special needs. After an evaluation, qualifying children will get an Individual Education Plan that outlines the specific supports he or she should receive, as well as goals for future success. For information about these programs, call 360-335-3000.5
