Shara Carter View Specialties

Hi. I am so glad you have decided to reach out for help and I'm hoping we can join together to help you find what your spirit and heart are longing for. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, and I'm hopeful that I can help you get to the other side of where you are now.

My name is Shara. Pronounced like "Share A"... my business is "Shara Smile" (My last name is Carter). I would like to share my smile with you after we have worked together. So many times people work so hard at keeping their life "together" on their own that they have lost their joy, peace, and overall sense of wellbeing. It takes a lot of time and energy to find the help you need. I hope now that energy can be put into feeling better.
 MY CREDENTIALS:

I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) in the States of Tennessee and Virginia.  This means that I can both diagnose and provide treatment for people suffering from mental health issues in these states.  I received my Masters of Arts in Education degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Virginia Tech University.  I completed my counseling practicum at INOVA Hospital CATS (Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Services) Intensive Outpatient Program, and my internship, residency and my first several years of practicing as an LPC at The Women's Center in Vienna, Virginia, a Clinical Mental Health non-profit in Virginia that serves women, men, couples and students. I also have worked as a High School Counselor in Fairfax, Virginia for six years.
 MY BACKGROUND:
I received my Bachelors of Science in Special Education from Middle Tennessee State University. In my early career, I worked as a teacher in both Tennessee and Virginina. I taught as a Special Education teacher, an Advanced Academic Placement (Gifted and Talented) teacher, and a General Education teacher for many years. This is where my foundation for working with young people, parents and families began. It is where my EMPATHY skills grew and where I continued to learn that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. People learn differently, have different upbringings, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. It was in my years teaching (and volunteering with teenagers and families) that I found how each member of the family system impacts the other.
During those many years in the classroom, my life experiences developed and grew. Relationships, marriages, adult challenges and how life stages, loss, transition, and the impacts of our culture became more and more relevant in my life. I began to learn more about these stages of life and the issues that come along with them which motivated me to seek more education in order to help and reach more people.

I have also had extensive experience and exploration in the theater arts, expressive arts (art, movement, writing, music), food, nutrition, exercise, yoga, and sign language interpretation (not certified). I am naturally creative and curious and I enjoy using different pieces of these elements in the therapeutic process to the extent that my clients are comfortable.
