Depression is generally considered a reaction to physical or psychological stress, and any number of stressors can lead to depressive symptoms. These can include personality, environmental, or biomedical factors, i.e. chemical imbalances in the brain, trauma, and/or situational factors. Sometimes illness or certain drugs (including alcohol, prescribed medications, etc.) as well as improper diet and nutrition contribute to depression. Treatment includes identifying and understanding the underpinnings and circumstances of your depression (insight), learning helpful coping skills, and getting extra support so you can feel better and recover.
