Each family member plays a role in the family system. Each is different and expected to act as a "team." When the team approach works, the family works at it's best. However, many family members act as though they are on opposite teams. Conflict is present, then oftentimes, detacment and rebellion. As someone trained in family therapy, I see each family member as part of a team. Sometimes, one member is in pain and acting out. The whole family will then feel the effect. I work within a family framework, but I do not treat families as part of traditional "family therapy." Family therapy sessions aim to strengthen all members of the family so they can work out problems together. Often, if one family member is identified as having an illness, the cause can be traced back to a larger family problem. If the person with the illness is treated while the rest of the family does not change, then the symptoms will persist. Family therapy breaks these cycles by teaching everyone to better interact with one another.

I use Emotionally Focused Family Therapy to help with the underlying negative cycles that lead to major communication disconnections between family members, such as mothers/ daughters. Sometimes families find themselves at an impasse and need a third objective party to help problem-solve. I work to help families bridge these impasses by bringing involved parties together and looking for common goals/strengths, what is currently working, what needs to change, and then helping the family to talk together to find resolution.
