Escondido has largely been associated with agriculture, with grapes, oranges and lemons the primary crop, along with olives and walnuts.  Growing avocados were added to the agriculture in the 1960’s.  However, from the 1970’s through today, the area has seen a large decline in the agriculture and a large boom in new housing developments. Regardless, agriculture is still one of the major industries in the area, along with tourism, retail, light industry and high tech.  The city has around 140,000 residents with a lot of the residents being more affluent due to the high housing prices in the area. Some points of interest in Escondido include the downtown area, with numerous restaurants and galleries, with every Friday night dedicated to the “Cruisin’ Grand”, which is held from April to September each year.1 It is very family oriented with a DJ and a hula hoop contest for the kids.  Hot rod and historic cars are also part of the fun on these Friday nights.

Current Initiatives

The Third District San Diego County Supervisor, Dave Roberts, reviewed an Escondido democratic initiative in which he emphasized mental illness as his primary concern. He has recently reported that he is in the process of implementing the Lauras Law. This law would cater to the health requirements of mental illness patients by allowing judges to order medication for patients. The medication would help them to get back into a healthier state of mind where they are capable of making decisions.5
