With a partner, I have developed a new and effective model of anger management that teaches you eight proven tools for anger control. These skill-based tools include; (1) reducing stress in your life, (2) developing empathy, (3)learning to respond instead of react, (4) changing self-talk, (5) communicating assertively, (6) adjusting expectations, (7) learning to forgive, and (8) retreating and thinking things over. These tools are taught to clients both in individual consultation and in anger management classes. They are also taught in online anger management programs I have produced.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwaive optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. Anger is not wrong. How we hurt others or ourselves in anger is damaging. I work with clients to release their anger and frustration in healthy ways prior to interacting with anyone. We then work on how to release tension and understand their feelings so that when they discuss challenges they do not re-ignite and exacerbate the sitaution. We explore the cycle of anger and violence and create saftey measures so this cycle is altered. Self-responsibility is critical. We work on body relaxation, visualization, and breath work to help the client understand their body and utilize it more effectively.

Being angry is not bad in itself. It is when we use the energy that anger gives us to hurt others and ourselves that cause problems. Anger is a "red flag" that tells us that something is not right in our lives. If you are experiencing this type of anger, you owe it to yourself and the others you love to find out what you can do to control and even let go of destructive feelings and behaviors and have a much more productive, happier life.

The goal is to handle tense situations in more constructive and positive ways by reducing the emotional and physical arousal that anger can cause. It will provide the tools to take back your life and resolve the triggers that result in unplanned anger reactions.

Struggling with expressing one's emotions can lead to anger outbursts. Anger denies us the opportunity to fully be heard by the person we are attempting to express our feelings to and can lead to misunderstandings and further emotional turmoil. We can turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms when we don't feel heard or understood. Alcohol use, drug use, compulsive sexual behavior, detachment and isolation, among other unwanted behaviors may develop as a way to numb intense, unresolved feelings. Counseling can help reduce and eliminate these unwanted behaviors by learning new ways to communicate, express and label emotions, deal with emotions as they arise, and connect with others.

Anger management has become a loaded phrase. The way I see it, difficulties in managing anger often stem from a lack of overall emotion regulation issues, childhood trauma, influence of negative stereotypes, and much more. In truth, it becomes less about anger and more about learning to accept and express negative emotions in general. Anger is often seen as a secondary emotion, in that it is prompted by an individual first experiencing an emotion which they do not feel comfortable expressing or have been taught not to express. While anger may make us feel powerful momentarily, it often weakens us and our relationships in the long run.

Everybody gets angry. Anger is a human emotion which can serve both positive and negative ends which, in itself, is neutral. Frustration, fear, feeling threatened or treated unfairly can trigger an angry outburst in any animal. Anger is a normal human emotion. It can be an appropriate response to injustice, unfairness or discrimination. However, what we need to achieve is a way of expressing anger that is reasonable, measured and proportionate. Cognitive behavioral therapy provides one of many possible answers to managing anger. Feelings are often created by our thoughts and examining our thought processes to see if they are reasonable and rational can help us with emotional regulation.

Anger is not only something to "manage." The feelings in anger need to be recognized, understood, and responding to in a way that make sense. You're not bad because you are angry, you treat yourself and others badly when your trapped in intense feelings. I help people come out of the shame of being labeled in negative ways because they struggle with anger. Anger becomes less of a struggle when you're not alone in it.
