Growing together with our loved ones can be an amazing gift. Somewhere along the line we sometimes struggle with those closest to us. We may bring our old emotional issues into a new relationship or perhaps we find our old ways of communicating with our loved one is no longer working the way it used to. Change is difficult but taking steps to increase communication and sort out our old beliefs that no longer serve us, can bring new light and joy to the relationships we cherish.

Family can be a wonderful source of strength and love, but the dynamism of so many individuals and their own needs and desires can also create different and new challenges. We come from a systems approach when working with families. We teach family members how to communicate more effectively with one another. There is an emphasis on personal responsibility and each family member looking at how their behavior is contributing to the problems. Building empathy between family members is also a main focus for us when working with families. We strive for families to leave sessions feeling more connected and understood by each other with the tools to be more successful in their communications. We do family therapy both in the office and in homes.

Family therapy is often times a necessary extention to individual therapy. Families are supposed to work as a system. Sometimes the system breaks down and one member may be viewed as the broken piece. Until the system comes together to work through what is really happening the problem often persists. In therapy together we can look at your system as a whole. Let's open lines of communication between family members, improve your relationships and begin enjoying your lives together again.

family therapy and family systems is truly my specialty. A family history of drinking alcohol for example is important for the client to be aware of in regards to their potential to become alcoholics. Also, patterns of anger, divorce, and abuse can be passed on from generation to generation, and it is important for the client to become aware and identify patterns verbally with the therapist to process and acknowledge these patterns for future generations. I also invite family members to be part of the session, as long as this is agreed upon by the client.

Families experience developmental stages, just like people do. Families are made up of individuals that require love, respect and must also exhibit a certain amount of cooperation to work together successfully. When families stop growing together and grow apart, there are many reasons why this might occur, and it is time to see a therapist experienced in the challenges of working with families. I will seek to restore the hierarchy - parents in the executive role and children learning and growing using the love and respect they receive from good parenting. I will work with the values and rules you prescribe for your family, and increase communication and cooperation.

Families can carry either unhealed wounds or trauma and/or may have unhealthy communication patterns. These issues can be significantly improved with family therapy. I create a safe space for all parties to share their feelings in a healthy way, without blame, focusing on their own personal experience. I then provide exercises and tools to help them gain understanding of one another and validate one another. This has often been markedly lacking and can be very healing to receive. We go back in time to understand how the current dynamic in the family developed and with that understanding, how it can be shifted into a healthier dynamic.
