Addiction is a family disease and Recovery for an individual is strengthened when a family enters recovery together. Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking. Contact us for an innovative neuroscience solution to family dysfunction. Kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or 877-606-6161.

Our relationships with family are the most complex we have. There are often unspoken hurt feelings, feeling responsible for one another and pain that is passed from generation to generation. In family therapy, we work on all what your family needs to heal itself from stuck patterns, unhelpful conflict resolution and disconnection. As your therapist, I help your family drop into a space of openness and vulnerability where each member can feel seen and understood by one another.

Families often involve three or more individuals, each with their own emotions, understandings, relationships, and challenges. This can make the family dynamic complicated. Also, sometimes one or more family members have experienced personal circumstances that the whole family can have a hard time understanding. Family therapy can help improve family boundaries, clear up misunderstandings, and re-learn healthier communication methods to empower your family to move forward and meet future challenges more effectively.

My work with families is from an attachment based focus meaning that problems within the family system may reflect unaddressed attachment disruptions in an earlier generation that unknowingly get perpetuated in the current generation. Disordered attachment, trauma or other adversity experiened but not addressed in childhood can result in problematic ways of perceiving and interpreting a family member's behavior resulting in conflict and perpetuation of dysfunctional, maladaptive relationships. Within a safe, collaborative, nonjudgemental environment, I help family members recognize, understand and resolve sources of conflict.

Family counseling is the most powerful form of therapy I know. For years, individuals with social and relationship problems were pathologized and treated alone. With the advent of Family Therapy, individual problems were considered a manifestation of issues through the entire family system. I work with everybody involved with the “patient” in the same room at the same time. Parents and children, brother and sisters have their first chance in years to speak and be heard by others in the family. I maintain order and safety, and engage the family in a balanced and fair manner. The results are often amazing.

Families of loved ones are often very affected by those with mental health disorders and substance use disorders. There are so many questions and its difficult to know how to support your loved one without enabling. At the same time, your own mental health can take a toll with trying to help them get well. I work individually with families to answer their questions, learn how to properly support their loved ones. I also work with the families of the individuals with mental health or substance use disorders in order to open up lines of communication and re-establish feelings of peace and connection in the family.

Families are under tremendous pressure to function well together without having the skills to do that. I work with the family to develop skills in listening, appreciation, working more effectively as a team.In our current over-scheduled, over-pressured world, families are confronting problems they have little capacity to do anything about. We can tend to cope by getting stuck in a narrow range of behaviors and responses even if they are not helpful. A child who has learned to have temper tantrums when she is angry, and her parents who have learned to punish or pamper her, are stuck in maladaptive, non-growthful environments—‘a bad play’. It’s like playing the same part in the same play on the....

Distressed family members too often exclusively focus their efforts on changing their difficult sibling, parent, grandparent or in-law. This is ineffective. Difficult family members often resist such efforts. I teach each family member how to first work on changing their own self-defeating emotional and behavioral reactions in response to their difficult family members. Once someone calms down and not gets so upset about the other people in their family they can influence other people to find better ways to live with or at least gracefully tolerate each other. I show each family member how to work on themselves in order to have a better chance of influencing others. Think about this.

Coming to counseling as a family is one of the bravest and more challenging steps that people who love each other can take. Often times, an event or specific incident will motivate a family to seek therapy. Whether your family is working through a specific crisis or hoping to improve overall relationships, I can help. I will work with your family to identify patterns that result in the same problems repeating. Once those patterns are recognized, we can break the negative cycles and create new, more effective ways of coping with challenges.
