I believe the voice of every family member is important. I believe we can learn much from our children if we as parents are willing to let our guard down and listen. I believe that parents have the leadership role in the home and are responsible for setting the pace. When these things get out of balance, problems occur. I strive to help families by giving each member a voice, by empowering parents to take a healthy lead in their homes, and by helping the children approach their parents in appropriate ways so they have influence into the family dynamic.

People do not exist in a vacuum. They are part of a family system. Whether that system is traditional, non-traditional, blended or any number of other descriptions, the individual is impacted by the family system and the system is impacted by the individual. As a result, the best method of addressing issues is with as much of the family system as possible. As I work with teen clients, I also will work with parents of my client, your/their child. While your teen is my client, it is important to work with the parents and at times the whole family as a "system" in the process. I will explain how I work with your teen, and keep a parent or both parents "in the loop" and "involved in the process" of the therapeutic journey. It is also important for parents to be aware of when a teen client is in harm's way.

There is not one template to tell any family exactly how to fix their problems. Families get healthier as individuals in the family become healthier, and visa versa. Sometimes personality conflicts exist that can be improved by simply understanding the enormous differences in how varying personality types interpret life and events.. Other times there are much deeper issues ranging from character disorders, neurosis, personality disorders, past abuse, etc. While the dynamics can sometimes feel daunting, a mood of compassion and hope from a skilled therapist can set the tone for improvement in what might have seemed a hopeless situation.
