Counseling Wilmington, Rancho Palos Verdes, Lomita, Long Beach, Torrance, Carson

San Pedro is located in the Los Angeles area, and became its own city in 1909. It is considered a major seaport and is primarily known as a fishing town. The climate is more of a Mediterranean climate zone with mild and wet winters, and warm to hot summers. Fortunately, with being located on the coast, the breezes from the Pacific Ocean keep the area cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. San Pedro is on the west side of San Pedro Bay and was used by Spanish ships as early as the 1540s.1 The city's original name was St. Peter of Alexandria, who was a fourth century bishop in Alexandria, Egypt. November 24th is St. Peter of Alexandria's Feast Day and is the day that Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered the area, subsequently naming it San Pedro. It wasn't until the late 1790s that regular settlement of the area began.

Mental Health in San Pedro

San Pedro is one of many communities in the greater Los Angeles area whose residents struggle with chemical dependency issues. Each year, tens of thousands of Los Angeles County residents are admitted to treatment programs or are incarcerated because of their habit.2 This causes much stress, anxiety and anger, and can tear couples and families apart. Individuals may distance themselves from their loved one because of their behavior, and those with an addiction may end up jobless, homeless, or both.

Youth and teens in San Pedro face many obstacles to good mental health. Most often, young people experience depression or anxiety as a result of problems at home, such as parents who constantly argue, to problems at school, such as bullying. Other teens may feel as though they don't fit in because of the way they look, their sexual orientation, or their religious beliefs. For some, the stress and pressure becomes too much and they begin to think about suicide. Los Angeles County has launched the Youth Suicide Prevention Project to raise awareness and to provide resources to young people who need help. The project provides school-based services for kids, as well as community-based services for parents and families.3

Current Initiatives

First 5 LA is a community-based initiative whose mission is to develop and maintain local programs to help individuals and families gain access to support services they need in order to function at an optimal level. The initiative brings together health agencies, grassroots organizations and educational institutions to provide services to families with children under the age of five. The programs seek to improve health, safety, and education. Access to family services, counseling, childcare, and substance abuse treatment are of particular importance. More information about First 5 LA can be obtained by calling 213-482-5902.4
