Imagine family outings to the beautiful beach any time you want to go. Picture the kids playing beach volleyball, surfing in the clear blue Pacific Ocean. Imagine mothers and fathers lying back and soaking up some rays as the kids splash in the water. All this and more awaits families in Redondo Beach, California. The teenagers can surf all year long. In fact, for many, it's a Christmas or New Year's tradition. And when you'd rather be on land, the whole family can enjoy the Strand, a paved walkway that extends all the way through Hermosa and Manhattan Beach.1 On a sunny day, it's not uncommon to see skateboarders, walkers, wheelchairs, roller blades, bikes, and many other forms of non-motorized transportation. The whole family can enjoy healthy forms of exercise spanning the three beautiful Pacific beaches. Mothers will spend countless days shopping and relaxing with the girls in Riviera Village. And dads will want to make sure to take the family fishing from the surf or the pier.

Mental Health in Redondo Beach

It is not uncommon for people who struggle with depression and other mental health issues to think about taking their own life. Fortunately, the suicide rate in Los Angeles County has shown a general downward trend since 2000. 2 However, other mental health concerns persist for adults in the area, including unemployment and addiction, to name but two. In order to address these continuing problems, mental health agencies throughout the county have implemented programs specifically targeting populations at risk of mental illness.

Residents of Redondo Beach who are in need of employment assistance can turn to a number of public or private organizations for assistance. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church offers weekend workshops for those seeking employment. Volunteers meet with workshop participants to offer coaching, advice, and spiritual support. Church members and non-members are welcome. Call 310-540-5252 for more information.3

Current Initiatives

In the 1950s, several beach communities, including Redondo Beach, joined together to form the Beach Cities Health District. The district is active to this day, with the purpose of addressing the many community-based health issues that residents of the beach communities face on a daily basis. By partnering with public and private agencies, the district is able to enhance programs and services that add to the overall quality of life. In addition to many health programs related to physical fitness, obesity awareness, and chronic disease prevention, the district focuses on improving access to mental health care and supportive services.4
