Rolling Hills Estates is a small city of just over 8,000 residents. Located on the northern side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the city's residents have easy access to other areas of Los Angeles County, including the city of Torrance. The city was established in 1957, but the history of the area dates back to Native Americans who called the area home until Spanish explorers claimed the area for their country and established rancho land grants in the late 18th Century. Today, the city has 30 distinct neighborhoods, each with it's own style and architecture for families to enjoy.1

Mental Health in Rolling Hills Estates

Rolling Hills Estates is a generally affluent area of Los Angeles County. People in the city have access to many medical and mental health care services that poorer residents of the city and county are unable to acquire. In fact, despite all the wealth in Los Angeles County, nearly 15 percent of residents live at or below the federal poverty line. More than 20 percent of the county's poor are children.2 This significant income disparity means that poorer residents are more susceptible to behavioral health and medical issues, including stress, malnutrition, and homelessness.

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health oversees a number of outreach programs that seek to improve services for mentally ill residents throughout the county, including in Rolling Hills Estates. Outreach workers seek input from local communities about how to better address mental health needs. Using input from all stakeholders, the department has created an infrastructure of support including local mental health agencies, social service agencies, charities, and churches. A particular emphasis is placed on improving access to services among disenfranchised and underserved populations within the greater Los Angeles area.3

Current Initiatives

Project ABC is a mental health initiative that seeks to address the social and emotional development of infants and children in Los Angeles County. The project provides training and resources for early childhood mental health workers, as well as educational materials for parents and other caregivers. Project ABC also works with local organizations, including clinics, hospitals, schools, and governments to coordinate effective early childhood mental health programs.
