St. Petersburg has around 250,000 residents and sits along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. The city experiences milder temperatures with up to 361 days of sun a year. There are 137 parks in the city that encompasses 2,300 acres of public land with seven miles of it being a preserved downtown waterfront. There is also a 245-acre nature preserve that has a botanical garden, a site for everyone to enjoy. If your family enjoys hiking, then the Pinellas Trail is a perfect place to go. There are 37-miles of hiking and biking trails that connects with central and north Pinellas County. Of course there is Treasure Island Beach or the historic Weedon Island Preserve that are great for families too.1 There are also many venues available in St. Petersburg, such as The Pier, Mahaffey Theater, Tropicana Field, or the Coliseum, all with different activities for people of all ages.

Mental Health in St. Petersburg

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder where a person feels that they are endangered or vulnerable in a space, either because they feel it is inescapable, or that they cannot be aided within it. It can be a crippling disorder that may be hard for others to understand. Fortunately in St. Petersburg, there is an Agoraphobics Support Group meeting twice a month at Bethel Lutheran Church. Dealing with caregiving for a friend or family member who is ill can be an emotionally taxing endeavor. Caregiver Coffee Breaks is a peer-support group which provides encouragement and information for caregivers. More information can be found at 727-586-4434.3

There are numerous difficulties that can occur when trying to manage depression or bipolar disorder. Family and friends, as well as those suffering from these illnesses, need support in the healing process. There are numerous support groups focusing on these illnesses in St. Petersburg, including groups which meet at Pasadena Community Church, St. Petersburg Baptist Church, and Lutheran Church of the Cross.4

Current Initiatives

For those who have undergone colostomy or other ostomies, there can be a lot of questions, trials and errors as you adjust to life after your procedure. These changes can also result in feelings of anxiety or stress, as many imagine that their quality of life may diminish. In St. Petersburg, there is an Ostomy Support Group which deals with education and support. It's open to everyone pre-operation or post-operation.5
