Houston is an older city that was founded in the late 1800s by the Allen brothers.1 They chose to name the city after a person by the name of Sam Houston and were delighted when it was officially a city a few years after that. When Houston was first formed they probably never thought that this small town was going to become such a great cultural and fun place to visit and live. The area is home to many major corporations that bring people to the city for career advancement and corporate growth plans. Houston is also a hub for airline layovers for those flying to Central and South America. Houston is a great place to visit if you are new to Texas or to the southern part of the United States. You may not know how warm the temperature really is in that area, and the people are frequently friendly and courteous.
Mental Health in Houston
Houston has experienced a steady rise in addiction among its adult population over the past 15 years. In Harris County, nearly 30,000 people are detained each year for drug-related offenses.2 The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston is a non-profit agency that provides resources for those affected by addiction. In addition to a number of recovery services, including 12-step programs, the Council works on educating individuals, families, employers, and the community about addiction and effective methods of treatment through a variety of prevention programs. To inquire about these programs, please call 713-942-4100.3
For those who have served in the United States military, returning home from combat can be a difficult transition. Thankfully, the Michael E. Debakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center exists to serve veterans across the Houston area. While post-traumatic stress disorder is perhaps the most common mental illness afflicting those returning home from service, the Debakey Center provides several services, resources, and programs for American servicemen and women. To learn more about all of the services available at the VA Center, call the toll free crisis line at 1-800-273-8255.4

Therapy Affordability Meter for Houston, TX
Some budgeting needed
While counseling can certainly be an expense for individuals and families in Houston, with proper budgeting, it is entirely do-able and the risk/reward is worth it. For some families, it may be difficult to sustain a commitment to therapy without proper insurance coverage. If this is you, ask your therapist about low cost options as practitoners in and around Houston may have flexibility or sliding scales. Low cost counseling and affordable therapy are also sometimes offered by listed city and university level clinics, check with your local Houston public health department.
