Anxiety can take many forms; it can be a build up of tension and worries, a specific fear or concern, intense fear in social situations, a reaction to trauma, or thoughts and routines that may be controlling your life. If you feel overwhelmed by stress or feel that anxiety has taken over your life, therapy can be a powerful tool in helping you improve your life. When combatting anxiety and stress, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you better manage your anxiety. We will do this by identifying goals so you can see the progress you are making, changing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs and replace harmful habits and ways of living so you can have a more enjoyable life.

We all experience anxiety at times. Anxiety is a way our body tells us that something is wrong. By using tried and true techniques to help you become more aware of what is occurring in your body, mind and emotional self, we help you to identify where you feel the anxiety in your body, how you feel it emotionally and the thoughts you experience when anxiety occurs. You can make meaningful changes in your life by learning how to slow these thoughts down while we work together to unravel the root causes of your stress and anxiety. We can help you to learn relaxation techniques and in some cases we collaborate with your Dr. to help you manage symptoms while working towards long term solutions.

It is hard to make it through the teen and adult years without experiencing anxiety and stress at some point. People sometimes lose themselves in parenthood, marriages, school, and/or work. My goal is to provide a safe place for emotional expression while at the same time providing tools to allow a person to cope with difficult life's most difficult experiences.

Anxiety can get in the way of every day life. Anything from not being able to advance at work, to social anxiety keeping you from moving forward, to significant traumatic experiences (PTSD). Anxiety is best treated utilizing a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach. We will work with you on systematic ways to reduce and manage your anxiety. Trauma is a specialty of ours. When your body experiences trauma it keeps your body in "fight or flight." We know what you went through was extremely scary and rocked your entire sense of self and sense of the world. We utilize CBT tools and techniques, grounding, breathing, reducing negative thoughts as well as psychodynamic approaches.

Anxiety and stress seem to be on the rise lately. In actuality, we all experience varying degrees of anxiety and stress throughout our lives and this is normal. And yet we do not want to feel either because they are uncomfortable. And yet, consider this: if you are walking down a dark alley at 2:00 am and NOT feeling anxious, I'm worried about you. If you are sitting in a famliar and safe environment and feeling anxious, I am also worried about you. Anxiety and stress are important to pay attention to and learn how to use them effectively OR to learn how to minimize them appropriately in your life. I'm happy to help you consider ways to cope with anxiety and stress.

Anxiety and stress are among my areas of expertise. I have conducted several workshops within the community as well as training at Shell Oil Co. for their quarterly health and safety meeting. As humans we all experience anxiety and stress. Together we will explore what is causing your distress to determine the most effective way to deal with it. We will also discuss the ways in which your belief system may be increasing your anxiety and ways to effectively cope. Relaxation training (something I teach) is often helpful to individuals experiencing stress.

Before receiving my doctorate, I did an internship at the largest public mental health clinic in North Texas. I volunteered at Parkland Psychiatric Emergency Room on the overnight shift on Sunday nights for 7 months in1995. There I learned to handle crisis situations of the utmost kind. Many cases were serious suicide attempts or active psychosis. I have been to 3 separate training seminars on hypnosis. Hypnosis is NOT frequently used in my office and is always optional but it can be a means of reducing anxiety and stress. We can learn to not upset ourselves and to relax. I will take an in-depth and broad comprehensive approach that involve no medications. There are a plethora of tools.
