Houston, nicknamed Space City, was founded in 1836 and is now the fourth largest city in the United States with a population of 5 million. Its history has been turbulent since significant oil discoveries in 1901, when Houston became the oil and gas capital of the world. Then in 1973 NASA established its space center and the population surged. The 1980s saw a world-wide oil recession which caused Houston to diversify into aerospace and biotechnology in the 1990s. If you are visiting Houston with your family, be sure to make a trip to the Southern part of the city to visit the NASA center.1 Set aside an entire day as there is much to see for children and couples alike.
Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Houston
As one of the largest centers of business in Texas and the surrounding states and the core of a rapidly evolving system of suburbs, Houston is home to thousands of families. Unfortunately, numerous families are torn apart due to domestic violence. Houston sees tens of thousands of domestic violence incidents each year, with even more reported in Harris County.2 Due to this, there is a high demand for family oriented mental health services in this thriving metropolis.
For those who are dealing with mental health issues within their marriage, Houston area organizations offer a variety of free and low cost services. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is one such service provider. Programs offered by Catholic Charities include couples counseling, pre-marital counseling, and classes for families who are adjusting to separation or divorce. To learn more about these important services, call 1-866-649-5862.3
Family Services and Assistance Programs
For families who require support services, the Harris County Community Services Department can provide assistance. The department offers emergency financial assistance for families who cannot afford to pay their bills. Low-income families and families with a disabled member can take advantage of case management services offered by the department that ensure the highest level of personal independence. The department also provides bereavement services for families who cannot afford burial services for a deceased loved one. For additional details about these and other programs, call 713-578-2000.4

Some budgeting needed
While counseling can certainly be an expense for individuals and families in Houston, with proper budgeting, it is entirely do-able and the risk/reward is worth it. For some families, it may be difficult to sustain a commitment to therapy without proper insurance coverage. If this is you, ask your therapist about low cost options as practitoners in and around Houston may have flexibility or sliding scales. Low cost counseling and affordable therapy are also sometimes offered by listed city and university level clinics, check with your local Houston public health department.
