Parents may be concerned with a destructive, needy, or unresponsive child, and rightfully so. Early problem behaviours are cries for help, and will only fester if buried and left unaddressed. Young children do not have the language to talk about their experiences, so it is helpful to watch their play, and, with their parents present, help them through the confusion and pain as it arises spontaneously. Children are resilient and often able to heal quickly with the right support. I work from an attachment based perspective that strengthens and sustains the bonds parents already have with their children. I will show parents what to look for, how to respond to their child.
Shawn McNabb, B.A., M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology), R.C.C.
I have found that play and other expressive therapies are helpful when working with children. This is because play is often their language. For example I have used sand trays and play figurines to let children explain how they feel about a particular situation in their life. It is often difficult to expect them to explain what is going on. It is far more effective to have them 'show' it.

Childhood is undoubtedly the most formative period of a person's life. This evocative life stage presents enormous possibilities for shaping the course of one's emotional life for years to come. Not only in terms of what happens to us in our early years but how our family fares in the face of larger stressful events and how it effectively it protects the child from harm and helps to ensure safety and resiliency throughout this critical period of development. Therapy can help parents and children to find ways to cope with the pressures and problems of life, and assist in developing the core strength needed to thrive with the 'growing up' process of life--in which a little goes a long way.

Children are so precious to me, and because I have two of my own...I know how precious they are to you too. I work together with my specially trained (psychiatric dog) named Target, when I work with children. Not only does Target help a child to feel at ease, but there is something incredibly special that happens when a child is cuddled up to a dog with whom he feels both warmth and softness. It doesn't hurt either that 'Target' is a great intensive for children wanting to return. (Which is often a concern) Also my relaxed style, experience with working as a Youth Leader, and Directing Children's productions, gives me an edge on making sessions fun, hip and creative.
Susan Dahlgren, MSW, RSW
My approaches are play-based, client-centred and parent-child relationship oriented. It is natural for children to play out her/his feelings and views of the circumstances. The following mediums are also used with teens: drawing/painting, drama, poetry and music. Children and teens develop enhanced self-esteem, reduced stress, more connected to their interpersonal relationships with family members and peers and develop new skills (or behaviours). Play and expressive therapies empower children and teens to understand relationships, release intense feelings, move forward from trauma or difficult changes and feel joys.

Working with families, we offer a safe, supportive counseling environment, where children can find the freedom to express their concerns. Parents gain a greater understanding of the issues within the family that may have a child acting out, or becoming withdrawn and uncommunicative. By identifying the positive contributions each member of the family can offer, we also help parents and children develop a greater understanding of their own feelings and behavior patterns, shift away from conflict, and find solutions that meet their needs.

Young children often communicate their feelings and thoughts through play. Our play therapy methods help to uncover how a child is feeling and what parents can do to address the problem. We also provide information on child development to assist parents to have realistic expectations of their child and to know what is normal and not normal. We provide recommendations on how parents can modify their parenting style to meet the needs of the child.

In my approach to children, children's development, and parenting I use the best most helpful parts that come out of years of work in this area: attachment parenting concepts (Neufeld), 'focusing' for awareness and communication (Gendlin), Barbara Colorosso's common sense and firmness, developmental stage awareness, much experience and practical sense. I connect well with children of all ages and understand parenting from the inside out. There is often so much that can be done that will bring improvement and relief.

Art Therapy and Play Therapy approaches are offered for kids ~ these are the languages of kids and the way that they learn. These approcahes are used to explore feelings and thought, problem solve and resolve conflicts or challenges in their lives. Parents should expect to be involved either in additional session(s) or at times, as part of a session. Parent support, eduction and assistnce is of high priority. Parent education is also offered, which involves a series of sessions to address conflicts in the family, behaviroal problems, discipline issues and improve overall family functioning and better relationships.
Tanya Elez, MA (Psych), MMFT, RMFT
I am a registered family therapist and strongly believe in working with young children in the family context. Family therapy has been demonstrated to be an efficient method for handling behavioural problems, normal life transitions, child's difficulty regulating emotion and so on. This is a collaborative process in which family members and the therapist work together in order to support the young child's development and their desired changes. Family therapy work can often be accomplished in a fewer number of sessions.
Naomi Kolinsky, M.Ed, RCC
With young children I use a combination of art, imagination, play, and talk therapy to help them express their feelings and discover creative solutions to their problems. They will learn new coping strategies to deal with changes and situations over which they have little control. I also guide parents to learn new ways of supporting and relating to their children that encourage their sense of security, growth, and well-being.

Counselling for children helps develop their emotional intelligence and resiliency. In a safe, comfortable and fun environment, children learn to express and process their life situation and experiences. Through the therapeutic use of playing, art activities, pretending and role playing, children feel accepted and liked for who they are. They are encouraged to believe in themselves and to feel good about who that person is. Children also learn appropriate ways of communicating and interacting in their world and how to foster and build healthy relationships with others.
Barbara Ohori, RPC
I work with teens from ages 13 and up. Having raised 4 children my self I am very comfortable and hopefully knowledgable working with teens. Teenage years can be a very turbulant time for both the theens and their families. Working with teens I have whitnessed the anxiety and stress they often feel around such areas as peer pressure, friendships gone wrong, feeling lonely, unsafe sex ect. These teens , despite having loving and caring parents often tell no one about how they feel. The great benifit in counselling is that they "get it out" in a non destructive way..often avoiding overwhelming feelings that can lead to very impulsive and distructive acts.
Sandeep Nagra, M.A., CCC
I have many years experience working with children who have many challenges such as ADHD, Autism, Fragile X Syndrome, phobias, and other developmental challenges such as learning dissabilities. I also work with children who are surviviors of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. My approach with children includes using play therapy, and creative ways to help children with behavioural challenges. I work collaboaratively with other health care professionals to meet the needs and goals for your child. I also include parents with my work with chidlren as they are an important part of the child's life and can play a large role in helping their child succeeed with his or her goals in therapy.
Kim White, M.A.,RCC, CPCC
Sometimes children and young people need extra support to deal with, or understand their emotions. Through genuine connection, play and deep understanding, counselling can help your loved one express what might be troubling them to a trusted other. In a supportive environment, children can learn and practice the skills required to manage their anxiety, develop assertion to address bullying and help manage loss or grief.
Lee Cassels, MA, CCC
Children love the non directive art and play therapy techniques I use. Children come to enjoy their sessions with me as I work to establish a relationship with them built on trust and positivity. Children are not pushed to open up but rather reveal their thoughts and feelings when they are ready. Often it takes several sessions to build the trust necessary for openness to happen.
