Anxiety is a reaction to an unnamed fear. This fear has some belief that feeds it, and once the belief is uncovered, and seen as only a thought, it becomes no threat to anyone. The belief in ones power of thought control over what "appears" to be fearful is an important step to empowerment of the individual to overcome anxiety. The immediate daily practice of focussed breathing will help to eliminate the symptoms quickly.

When engaging in counselling for anxiety and stress, Erin has both short term and long term goals. The short term goals include crisis management, helping clients to develop some basic coping skills, and giving clients information to help them develop an understanding of what is going on in their mind and body when anxiety kicks in. Long term, Erin helps clients to increase their self awareness and understanding of triggers. She also helps clients to explore the beginnings of their stress and anxiety and develop long term coping strategies.

Anxiety is a feeling of dread at its least, or thoughts that lead you to believe you are unsafe and/or about to die at its worst. I offer interventions to this challenge, all of which engage the brain and body. We can take a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach and examine and challenge faulty thinking. We can also use Neurofeedback (NFB) as an approach to calming the central nervous system so the frontal cortex of the brain can engage in logical thinking and keep the brain from having to go to the place of anxiety unnecessarily. Another approach I use, EMDR, helps the brain to reprocess old hurts and or trauma, taking the charge out of the experience.

Do you long to feel more relaxed, and at ease with life? In our world today there is no shortage of stress. There are so many expectations on us from workplace, family, and ourselves. Without outlets for relieving stress, we begin to experience anxiety. With anxiety comes a heightened state of arousal that lingers long after stressful experiences. This can cause physical symptoms like headaches, back pain, and a queasy stomach, and emotional symptoms such as fear and avoidance. We have worked successfully with people struggling with anxiety (social, school, general, PTSD, and specific phobias from spiders to dentists) to live more enjoyable lives. Practices such as yoga, walking or meditation often help when we are thinking of issues of anxiety or stress. Have you become too busy? Do you need to take time out to take a few deep breaths? What are you eating? Is it creating more stress for you? Are there parts of our lives that we can change? Why are we feeling stressed? Is it a way that we are looking at a situation?

I work with children, teens, adults and families who are facing difficult decisions and seeking happier balanced lives. We all suffer from worry and anxiety at times in our lives, but when these problems become overwhelming, I provide a safe, non-judgmental, caring counselling environment. My therapeutic approach starts with building a trusting relationship and then addresses these issues with strategies such as those that are built into the Cognitive/Behavioural framework. For example, this approach helps clients better manage their feelings and worries and leads to a more balanced and happier life.

While most treatment approaches for anxiety and stress are effective on the surface, they don’t treat the real problem. Mantras, deep breathing, and rational dialogues about your fear being irrational rarely work---for most people don’t believe it or you! Imagine if you can trick the brain into changing without you telling your conscious mind that you are changing it? Problem with anxiety and stress is that the brain in this state knows you want to change it and it resists. Contact Kevin@kevinfleminphd.com for the ultimate stress and anxiety solution that will literally change your brain's autonomic nervous system patterns while you sit on your butt. 877-606-6161.
