Anger can be a challenging emotion to deal with. It can create tension and often lead to the breakdown of relationships. There are many reasons why we may have issues with anger. For example, anger can stem from trauma, depression, or an inability to regulate emotions. If we have never learned how to effectively communicate in our family of origin, we may only know how to express ourselves with anger. Anger can also be used to maintain power and control. In a safe and supportive environment, I will assist you in understanding the root of your anger and identify triggers. I will provide you with tools to regulate emotions and create new healthy ways to communicate.

Anger is a normal human emotion which we experience in response to feeling threatened. However, when not managed well, anger can negatively affect our relationships and cause problems in our work performance, romantic partnerships, social functioning, or parenting. A number of psychological tools can be used to safely address anger issues. In addressing your anger issues, you will learn to be more aware of your physical and other anger related cues, be more accepting of your internal psychological processes and be able to express your anger in a healthy and contained manner.

I work with the client to obtain a history of how difficult situations were handled in their family, with their peers, with their professional and personal relationships. I have several techniques that I teach to the client to help them through an emotionally charged time. Understanding where their beliefs came from is a major step towards changing how they respond to situations. Anger is an okay emotion; it is how we respond to it that matters.

Using a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hakomi Body Centered Therapy I help clients with anger issues and to understand the origins of their anger. Helping clients to understand their emotions and how the physical body plays an integral part to complete the picture of managing anger and negative emotions is a key part of the anger picture. Clients must be willing to "do their homework" between each session, and if they do, great progress, growth and understanding can be made in their life.

Many people struggle to manage and express their anger effectively due to often intense and overwhelming feelings. Families, work, friendships and one’s personal well-being can be destroyed unintentionally along the way. Anger is an emotion that can make you feel out of control or alienate you from others if it is unleashed in volatile ways. Understanding how anger works and learning some anger management skills can help you take a stand and make your point but not at the expense of losing relationships. My approach includes first gaining a clear understanding as to how anger is negatively affecting your life and then providing you both knowledge and skills to positively address your situation.

In our culture, anger is often more of a reactive emotion that covers up other, more vulnerable emotions. A common example is men who are taught as children that it is more acceptable to show anger than sadness. So, after awhile, whenever sadness or vulnerability is felt, it immediately gets replaced with anger, which is what is most often experienced by others. My approach to dealing with anger is to discern whether anger is the true emotion felt or covering up something else. Than, depending on this, to build more acceptance and tolerance to what is underneath the anger so that it can be expressed in a healthier way, which regulates anger more effectively.

I look at what it is that is making us angry, and our attitudes. Sometimes the practice of patience may be required. Sometimes we need to rehearse using our communication skills to make sure that our point is getting across. We need to examine what is triggering us, and how we can find relief. Negotiation might be necessary to come to an agreement, or a practice to release our anger.

Anger is a normal emotion and needs to be expressed like any other emotion in a healthy manner. Do you have explosive reactions; do you take your anger out on others or yourself, or do you suppress it? If anger is getting in your way, I can help you to learn how to manage it. Anger is a secondary emotion to more painful emotions such as sadness, shame or guilt. I will work with you and create a safe environment where you will be able to process these emotions. You will learn how to identify your triggers and calm yourself before you lose control. By learning to manage and express your anger in healthy ways will help you in your relationships, career and self-esteem. You will learn ways to remain calm and communicate your feelings.
