Anger is a strong emotion and when not regulated in a healthy manner, it can impact us in different ways. It can impact the most important relationships in our lives, our work and even how we feel about ourselves. When working with anger, I want my clients to first listen to what anger is trying to tell them. Anger, like any other emotion, has a message for us. It might be trying to tell us something about the pains we have never dealt with, the boundaries in our lives that are being crossed, and the changes that we desire in our lives. Once we learn to your anger and hear it out, we will work on tools to regulate it better and express it constructively without suppressing it.

When it comes to anger management, we know that there are underlying reasons that trigger our clients to feel frustrated. We work from different modalities that fit best with the client to help them find new ways of dealing with how they feel. We teach them new ways of coping and dealing with everyday stressors. We work collaboratively with the client so that they can feel in control of their emotions again.

Personally, I struggle with the term "anger management". Anger is an important emotion that needs to be viewed through a lens of acceptance not barred to a back room. Until a person understands the myriad of emotions that lie under the surface of 'anger', they are often controlled by these emotions, One of the purposes of anger is to alert the emotional person to the fact that something is wrong (much like pain signals the body when something is wrong). People do need to "control" their behaviour - especially when feelings are strong. i believe that people can learn to manage their life better once they understand what is affecting them AND what they want to accomplish by their action.

I work with the client to obtain a history of how difficult situations were handled in their family, with their peers, with their professional and personal relationships. I have several techniques that I teach to the client to help them through an emotionally charged time. Understanding where their beliefs came from is a major step towards changing how they respond to situations. Anger is an okay emotion; it is how we respond to it that matters.

Anger is ultimately a healthy emotion that can be an adaptive and appropriate response to our circumstances. It can let us know what we need and be a helpful guide in taking positive and proactive actions. Yet, in some cases it can control and motivate us to take actions we regret or that lead to negative consequences. Developing an empowering relationship with anger is a skill that can be learned. In order to do so, our individual contexts need to be considered—our personalities, values, life histories, and underlying psychologies. There is no one size fits all approach. Anger can fulfill different functions in each of our lives.

Anger is most often a secondary emotion. I believe our true power is understood when we can recognize the primary emotions underneath the anger. That is when many people begin to feel a stronger sense of control in their lives without feeling like they're fighting for it. I am excited to work on this in counselling and support people in unlocking their most authentic self by digging deeper than the anger on the surface.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. Anger is a normal healthy human emotion. When people allow it to get out of control it can turn destructive, it can lead to problems at work, personal relationships, and the overall quality of life. I like to think of anger using the metaphore of a hammer. You can do a lot of things with a hammer. You can build things and you can tear things apart. The hammer is just a tool just like anger can be a tool. Anger isn't the problem, it's what you do with it. I help people learn the skills they need to use their anger and the underlying hurt and feelings of injustice to make positive choices that lead to positive relationships and experiences.

As a retired Marine Corps Officer, I have had a lot of experience with anger management, both personally and with my clients. Once again, I feel the key to anger management is identifying the root cause of anger. Oftentimes we improperly project our internal anger onto someone who does not deserve it. My clients report that after working with me, they no longer project anger onto the innocent people in their lives.

While anger is a natural human response to frustration or upset it needs to be managed appropriately. In counselling, I help clients of all ages identify and understand their anger "triggers." We then process together appropriate responses to such triggers and practice such reactions. Over time, the goal is for clients to use the tools and strategies learned in counselling and apply them in their everyday lives at home with family, at school with peers and in the work place with colleagues. I look forward to working with you to make positive life changes.

It is my hope that clients will learn strategies to assist them in more effectively managing emotions of anger and the accompanying negative behaviours. Clients will explore and identify underlying causes of such emotions, as well as situational “triggers”. It is also my hope that clients will develop communication skills that will promote healthy interactions and successful resolutions of conflicts should they occur.

Anger can be all-consuming, it affects our quality of life, and it can damage relationships we care about. When it comes to anger management, I would be most likely to offer support through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and/or Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. These two related therapeutic approaches use different strategies, from challenging your thinking in order to help you feel better to learning more effective ways of interacting with others. I believe in adjusting my approach in order to meet each client where they are at, because no two people struggling with anger management are the same. I will listen carefully to your story and make a treatment plan accordingly.
