Torrance is home to one of the largest malls in America, with 2.5 million square feet, called the Del Amo Fashion Center. The only other mall that is larger is the Mall of America. The mall was originally built in 1958 but merged with another mall to expand in 1970. More expansion in 1982 made it the world's longest mall. The mall has been used in making different movies, such as Jackie Brown and Bad Santa. Not only is the shopping great in Torrance, but the outdoors is a prime area to rest and relax at the beach, or for visiting the Madrona Marsh, which is a nature preserve that was once saved for oil production, but has since become a natural preserve.1, Of course, visitors and residents alike enjoy watching the annual Armed Forces Day Parade, which first debuted in 1960 and has been running ever since.

Mental Health in Torrance

Although many mental health treatment facilities exist in Torrance and the surrounding areas, there are nevertheless thousands of people who need care who do not get it. In fact, about 50 percent of adults and two-thirds of adolescents in California do not get treatment when they need it. Although mental illness, chemical dependency, and other mental health issues impact people of all ages and races, minority groups experience higher rates of mental illness. Consequently, many people in Torrance, especially minorities, do not get treatment they need to function at an optimal level of health.2

Elementary school and middle school-aged children in Torrance can take part in a number of after-school programs throughout the city. These recreational-based programs are designed to enhance self-esteem, communication skills, self-expression, and social functioning through group interaction. Children can participate in activities ranging from sports to music to group discussions. A qualified staff member oversees each after-school group. Additional information about these and other programs is available by calling the Torrance Community Services Department at 310-618-2930.3

Current Initiatives

Like many cities in the Los Angeles area, Torrance has many residents who are homeless. To help combat this issue, Mental Health America of Los Angeles has implemented the Homeless Connections Initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to provide mental health, physical health, and substance abuse services to those who are chronically without a home. The initiative combines the efforts of private and public mental health agencies, government entities, businesses, churches, and schools to address the needs of the community's neediest citizens. The initiative takes a three-pronged approach to help - to count the number of people living on the street, to provide care, and to connect people with programs to help them improve their lives.4
