In working with people wrestling with addictions I utilize skills from DBT, EFFT and take a harm reduction, trauma informed approach to our work together. Addiction is any extreme habit that is self-destructive. We generally think first of alcohol and other drugs when we think of addiction, but we can be addicted to pretty much anything: watching TV, scrolling, eating, pornography, gaming, cleaning, shopping. I use a harm reduction approach to working with people who are grappling with addiction. For some, stopping the activity completely is the best way want to go, and it works. For others, learning to safely manage the activity and reduce use is preferred, and this can also be successful. There isn't a generic solution to addiction, and I work with individuals to regain their freedom in a way that makes sense for them.

Whether you want to cut back or are seeking total abstinence, I will support you. Together we will come up with a plan detailing your goals and ways of getting there and discuss reintegrating meaning in your life. Addictions can crowd out everything else that was once important to you; counselling can help you reclaim things you have lost or identify and pursue new avenues. We will also pursue practical strategies for maintaining your gains and things to do to get “back on the horse” when you slip. Acceptance, kindness and collaboration are key features in my counselling style. I will never add judgement to the mix; chances are, you do enough of this already. Self compassion is key.

My approach to addiction is multi-faceted and individually focused. Exploring personal history and trauma and grieving losses are often elements, as is reconnecting with the body and its wisdom. In many cases, developing one's spirituality is central to healing. I provide a safe environment for exploring and listening to the range of feelings that have been avoided through the addiction so that reconnection with self is restored and one's deepest longings can be satisfied.

My qualifications include a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I am also completing the education and supervision hours needed for certification as a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT-Candidate) and Certified Couples Betrayal Recovery Therapist (CCBRT-Candidate) with the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). The programs offered by IITAP have provided me with specialized training, strategies, and tools to support and rebuild relationships that have been shaken by infidelity, problematic sexual behaviors, complex trauma, mistrust, and addiction.
