Mental Health in Brentwood Los Angeles
The neighborhood of Brentwood does not provide many low cost clinics for people who need psychological therapy. Neither does the City of Los Angeles, which seems to have handed mental health services to the County of Los Angeles. On the Citys website, there are programs for Seniors, youth, women, the homeless, and persons with AIDS, but no mention of mental health clinics.2 The County website has a page devoted to mental health resources. Adults who need low cost counseling can perform searches, and find outpatient or inpatient clinics within a reasonable distance from Brentwood.3
Universities with graduate programs in Psychology often sponsor low cost community clinics. Antioch University in Los Angeles has one of these programs. They offer a comprehensive program, which ranges from anxiety, depression, coping with life transitions, or chronic illness.4
Current Initiatives
Los Angeles County wants to implement major changes to how it delivers mental health services. The first plan is to install a database, Intergrated Behavioral Health Information System (IBHIS) which will help coordinate mental health care records, streamlining the mental health care system for residents and providers. Their second concern is to meet the standards of the Affordable Healthcare Act. These changes wont happen overnight, but it is to be hoped that they will lead to improved mental health for clients. Futher details on these initiatives, and how the County proposes to implement them can be found on its website, through the Winter 2014 issue of Mind and Matters.5
