The Los Angeles County Fair is one of America's largest in both size and attendees. The fair was established in 1922 and has been continuously held there except during WWII, when the fairgrounds were used as a Japanese American internment assembly camp, a US Army ordnance and desert-training base, and a POW camp.1 Some of the special effect scenes from Live Free or Die Hard, a Bruce Willis movie, were filmed at the Fairgrounds. When California was considering being two states, Northern California and Southern California in the 1920s, Pomona was in line to be the capital city of Southern California. Some famous people that were born in Pomona include Jessica Alba, boxer Sugar Shane Mosley, Kobe Bryant's wife Vanessa Bryant, and Mark McGuire, a retired professional baseball player.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Pomona

Over the last ten years, the homeless population in Pomona has risen steadily. As of 2013, approximately 630 people were without a permanent residence, 345 of which lived on the streets and 285 who lived in shelters. Unfortunately, funding for shelters is on the decline. As a result, many families who need food, clothing, shelter and other services are not getting the resources they need.2 However, there are many private and public entities who dedicate themselves to helping couples and families move off the street and into safe, permanent, independent living quarters.

Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Los Angeles provides many programs for families in need in the Greater Los Angeles area, including Pomona. Women and children who have experienced abuse and neglect can find assistance they need to be safe and get back on their feet. Shelters are available for emergency situations, as well as for long-term needs. Shelters are staffed by qualified clinicians who work to better the lives of the people in their care.
