The city of Claremont, CA, located 30 miles east of Los Angeles in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, offers a variety of recreational facilities for families of all kinds.1 Within the city itself (population about 34,000 at last count), parks abound and provide facilities for all kinds of family activities. Largest of these is Cahuilla Park, located just north of Claremont High School at Indian Hill Blvd. & Scripps Dr. Within the park are eight tennis courts, a basketball court, a skate park, a picnic area, a playground and several baseball fields. Wheeler Park, the southernmost park in the city, offers Claremont’s only roller hockey court. Wheeler Park is located at 626 Vista Drive. A very family oriented city, Claremont sponsors a variety of activities and entertainment for all ages each summer and fall featuring concerts, a July 4th celebration and parade and a Halloween “trick or treat alternative” Oct. 31. In nearby Upland, children and teenagers can play arcade games at Boomers or the James Games Family fun Center or play lazer tag at Lazer Island all year long.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Claremont

In any relationship, there are bound to be problemsno marriage is perfect, and that is something that nearly everyone knows. However, divorce rates in Claremont, California are close to 45% and this is much higher than it needs to be.2 With divorce rates so high, this shows that couples are facing many problems and mental health among couples is not as good as it should be. There are many factors that lead to this, and these problems are widely varied for each couple.

Some of the main problems here are poverty and financial struggles, as well as child care and limited job opportunities. In many cities, lack of education is often a problemhere, however, this is not the case as nearly 60% of the population has a college degree.3 The problem is that there are limited resources and job opportunities. Many families and couples are unable to find the help that they need and simply cannot continue with their marriages; desperation and frustration lead to divorce and unhappy couples. The truth is, however, that help is available to married couples (as well as couples who have a domestic partnership) and it is simply a matter of finding the assistance that the couple needs.

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Believe it or not, there are hundreds of different organizations, groups, and other resources that are available to all couples and families in the Claremont area. There are close to 200 food pantries, homeless shelters, nearly 40 child care centers, over 150 clothing drives, homeless shelters, rental assistance, and payday loans that are available options.4 In addition, couples can receive growth counseling that will help couples and families to improve their relationships on a mental level.5 Mental health assistance and family services are very important in preventing divorce and improving couples mental health across the city.
