Anyone who has suffered with an addiction or lived with someone with an addiction knows the powerful foothold it can have. Addiction ruins families, careers, relationships, self-esteem, and self-confidence. Individuals are left wondering what happened and how it got that far. The good news is that it is never too late. You can be taught to recognize and avoid triggers, choose alternative behaviors, and get back the life you once had.

Addiction Counselor

Linda Berko, RN, LCSW, BCD

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Within driving distance of Atlantis

Addictions is not my specialty, but I was the trauma therapist for 3 years at a very well regarded treatment center. My view on addictions is that it's an attempt to chemically regulate a dysregulated nervous system. I help people work through the addiction through learning how to regulate their nervous systems. What physicians do with medicine is to chemically stop the kindling of the amygdala. I do this through your own innate healing capabilities. We are all hardwired to heal. No magic, it's in our brains!

I honor the power of choice in recovery. I don't believe that clients have to hit "rock bottom" before they benefit from treatment. Recognizing that individuals are ready for treatment at many different stages, I can meet them wherever they are and help them develop the motivational tools to achieve lasting recovery. We will develop a program that will meet your individual physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. I am committed to finding therapies that will most effectively guide you to recovery. The first step is YOU!

I believe that the notion of "addictive personalities" is nonsense. There are important differences between drug addiction and so-called internet addiction, for example. I know that addictions arise for many reasons, and that we may never understand most of those reasons. Happily, people can and do overcome addictions without having to understand all of its mysterious causes. 12-step programs are popular, but I reject the idea that we must surrender control of our behavior to a higher power in order to solve these problems. Building solutions for addictions is not very different from building solutions to other problems. We need only use our existing strengths in ways that make sense.

Addictions form as a result of the "perfect storm" of issues, events, mental, and emotional processes. They are maladapative ways of coping to escape and attain true wants and needs that often take on a life of their own and become habitual. The individual and family often experiences breakdowns in finances, career, health, relationships, spirituality contributing to the desire to use more substances. Over time habitual patterns form that are difficult to break and the person ends up feeling caught up in a vicious cycle. At Renew Center of Florida we work with the individual and family to eliminate the power of the addiction and assimilate a variety of useful and empowering coping tools.
