Addiction does not just include drugs and alcohol, but also gambling, sex & pornography, food, shopping/ spending, and the list goes on. It is even possible to be addicted to a person or relationship which is called codependency. There are many theories on the origins of addiction and why it occurs in some and not others as well as different avenues of finding healing from underlying issues. If you are struggling in this area, God understands you do not want to give in to these urges and impulses.

Addiction Counselor

Bruce Quinlan, D.Min, MA Professional Counseling

Dr. Bruce Quinlan

3000 Hartley Road Suite 3, Jacksonville, Florida

I normally will act more as a coach than a therapist for alcoholism. This is because I believe strongly that intensive outpatient treatment programs (or inpatient with detox), attendance at AA, and working through the 12 steps with a sponsor is the most effective approach. For sexual addiction I go through Patrick Carnes workbook with the client (Tiger Woods therapist) and require that they participate in SA, Faithful and True, or at least one other recovery group. In general I am trying to help the person stop the behavior, but to also understand it and get inner healing for the root causes of the addiction. Then I help create a "trajectory" of recovery, which is a pathway for healing.

As a human being, we depend on our senses to function in the world: smell, touch, taste, sight, hearing. But sometimes in our lives, overfeeding these senses will tend to dull our mental and emotional capacities and driving us into self-forgetfulness. This enables us to avoid addressing difficulties in relationships, stress in our lives, and deep hidden issues that we have never resolved. Addictive behavior is a way to cope with this but sooner or later we find this does not resolve or help us in the long run. An experienced therapist can help you identify and work with these problems, giving you a psychological and spiritual foundation in which to heal yourself.
