I emphasize the importance of compassion, self-acceptance, and addressing underlying pain as key components of recovery. I do not agree with this cultures approach of criminalizing drug use and clearly see how this belief has done a disservice to people who ultimately need healing. I believe that the notion of "addictive personalities" is nonsense. There are important differences between drug addiction and so-called internet addiction, for example. I know that addictions arise for many reasons, and that we may never understand most of those reasons. Happily, people can and do overcome addictions without having to understand all of its mysterious causes. 12-step programs are popular, but I reject the idea that we must surrender control of our behavior to a higher power in order to solve these problems. Building solutions for addictions is not very different from building solutions to other problems. We need only use our existing strengths in ways that make sense.

I worked in adolescent and adult PHP/IOP/OP rehabilitation centers for individuals diagnosed with a substance use disorder, and/or a co-occurring diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, eating disorder, trauma or other mental health issues. I used various proven therapy techniques to help my clients learn new coping behaviors, learn how to stop impulsive behaviors, and recognize how their thinking influenced their behavior.
