I have worked with young children for 27 years as a special education teacher. I learned ways of helping them be successful. My internship was counseling young children at a private school that was created to help children with learning problems. Many children I counseled had more than one disability. I realize that it is not easy to raise a child who has the extra burden of coping with a disability or an emotional disorder, but there are many things a parent can do to help their child. Children of all ages can have problems that affect how they feel, act, or learn. There are types of therapy such as play or art therapy to assist children in expressing their feelings. By processing these feeling, children learn to cope with the issues in their environment and to cope better. Together the therapist works closely with the parents and the child to create a safe environment to do this.
