Orlando is one of the major cities within Florida that houses the famous Walt Disney World, along with thirteen other family and tourist attractions. Orlando has the most theme parks and entertainment attraction sites than anywhere else in the country. The climate in Orlando is humid subtropical, which means the area stays warm throughout the year, which is a perfect spot for living or vacationing. There are over 48 million visitors each year to the Orlando area to visit Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios and the Orange County Convention Center. Of course, the theme parks and attractions are what families come to see. There are many different facets of Disney World, such as Epcot Center, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, and of course downtown Disney, all with a family-oriented atmosphere.1 Other family attractions include Sea World that also has many different amusement-type rides and a water park, not to mention the marine animals.

Mental Health in Orlando

Healing after the suicide of a loved one is a long and arduous process. Without the help of others who have experienced the same thing, your situation after having lost a friend or family member can feel hopeless. Fortunately, in Orlando, there's HALOS, Healing After a Loved One's Suicide, a peer support group where you can talk to other people experiencing the same things, and lend support yourself, if you can.2

The Mental Health Association of Central Florida is an Orlando-based non-profit which has operated since 1946. Its mission is connect people residing in the Orlando area with mental health support services offered by the city, county and other organizations. They are located at 1525 East Robinson Avenue and can be reached by phone at 407-898-0110.3

For those wondering about the transition from one gender identity to another, and seeking help with all the changes it brings, Orlando's The Center, a non-profit, offers peer-to-peer support groups of all kinds. Aside from support groups, The Center also offers educational events and community events.4

Current Initiatives

In the Orlando area, children who end up in the juvenile justice sometimes need mental health support. Emotional and behavioral issues also contribute. Wraparound Orange is a county program that works in conjunction with county juvenile programs, in order to help children and families have access to mental health services. They can be reached at 407-836-6547.5
