Most couples counselors expect you to come weekly for many months, and you will not know in advance how much time and money you will have to spend. Couples almost always need just 3 or 4 sessions with me to leave happily, their problems gone permanently. Couples who have seen me over the years have paid much less than they would have paid to old-fashioned therapists who get so bogged down in psychoanalyzing couples that most couples quit in frustration, having wasted lots of money and found no permanent solutions. My goal in working with couples is to teach them ways to communicate effectively and find healthy avenues to get their needs met in a relationship. We will explore concepts like validation and the ways in which it serves as a uniting force. Further, I find that it's helpful to teach clients about " love languages" and the ways in which understanding this idea can help people to begin to speak the language of their partner, and begin feeling heard for the first time.

Working with couples is extremely specialized and should only be done with a trained clinician. Please ask the right questions to ensure you are in good hands with someone who knows how to guide you. The client is the relationship - not the individuals! So an individual therapist is not the way to go here. At KML, we have a trained PSYPACT psychologist who is licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), so she can work in any PSYPACT state. This work should focus on what the couple wants for their relationship (sometimes the goal is uncoupling kindly), guiding the couple in healthy growth of the relationship, and all without shame! In Couple’s Counseling; I accept the view that as individual we are complex beings who are multifaceted and therefore multi-storied. So in working with a couple, I try to balance the conversation, so that each feels heard. My aim is be neutral to each, as much as possible. So in the initial session we collaborate in setting ground rules. I encourage autonomy so each know his/her right to govern their own freedom of choices and behaviors. I steer away from cookie cutter activities as I believe that in the process of therapy client will use their resources to find their own path that work for their relationship. I utilize an integrative approach to therapy.
