My approach to family therapy is to allow space for family members to voice their thoughts and opinions to each other in a safe space. Prior to coming together, I work with family members individually to help them to learn how to express themselves effectively and utilize validation as a uniting force within the family. Even in families where it seems impossible to find something to validate, it is important to come back to an understanding and validation of the family member's emotional experience. I teach each of my clients how to use "I" statements to express themselves and take ownership of their own emotional responses. It is during these times that people truly feel seen and heard.

Families engage in unhealthy and ineffective ways of relating that can continue for years leaving all parties feeling burdened and strung out. Gaps and distances are created to manage difficult emotions and you may need a guide to help you rebuild a broken relationship. I help families address dysfunctional patterns that interfere with the closeness they would like to obtain. I help members identify patterns used to protect and distance themselves. I assist family members in engaging in a manner that recognizes the emotional needs of the family, and foster empathy for one another's position in family conflicts.

Family systems have a huge impact on our life. There has always been the argument between nature and nurture as to the cause of any emotional issues we face. The reality is there is some of both involved. It is usually the client who comes in for the counseling but a lot of the solution is found in the family system. Many influences and issues are passed through generations of a family. Therefore there are times when it is profitable to work with the entire family in counseling. Although we are not committed to solely a family systems approach to counseling we do recognize the need to address family issues that are often personified in the member with the perceived problem.

Family therapy is understood through relationships as such the family is considered the client. I work with clients using an integrative approach of MRI strategic therapy, Bowenian family systems, and Solution Focused therapy. Families processed problems that maintain the presenting issues, then gained understanding of how the issues may be augmented within multi-generations. Through processing, emotional patterns are explored as family members achieve increasing self-differentiation, and empowered to use cognitive abilities over emotions. They are able to explore exceptions, while building on their strengths and resources in resolving initial and future problems.

My training in systems theory, or how to look at what is happening between people, makes for more effective therapy. Instead of looking for what's wrong with a member of the family it involves looking at all of the relationships and dynamics in the family in order to improve things as a whole. When the problems involve children and teens I believe parents have the most power to change things. Determining what changes are important and most effective in repairing things in a family is what family therapy is all about.

While it can be interesting to explore all the roots of family problems, it can also be painful. More important, it almost never helps families to function better. Instead of dredging up the past (which wastes lots of time and money and cannot be changed), I help families to build solutions that are effective and permanent -- even if they don't fully understand how the problems developed.

The family can be one of the most important parts of a person's life and, quite often, significantly shapes a person's worldview. The family can impact a person in both negative and positive ways, and those impacts can have lasting effects on a person's sense of well-being. When you are a member of a family, it can feel like you are part of a big hub. Imagine what it feels like when the hub is not functioning well. When the family is in tune with itself, its members can focus their energies on living better, looking forward to spending time together rather than avoiding each other.
