It's been estimated that in the U.S. 6.7% of all adults aged 18 or older had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. Very few of these people receive any treatment to help reduce the depressive symptoms. I formulate an individualized treatment plan to begin reducing the symptoms baed on their background and history. This is primarily a cognitive-behavioral approach, whereas the client can begin to identify the negative thoughts that can intensify the depression. We come up with ways to neutralize these thoughts, while also beginning to create new positive thoughts. There is also an emphasis on slowly engaging in behaviors that offset the depressive symptoms.

The term depression is used widely but often an individual is just feeling sad about an event and does not have a true clinical depression. This will involve a thorough assessment. Recommending medication is never my first choice, but in some cases, a referral to your Primary Care Physician or a Psychiatrist for medication evaluation may be helpful to take the edge off of symptoms so you can work more effectively in session.
