Much of my practice focuses on persons suffering from depression. Clients include college age students, young and middle-aged adults as well as the elderly. I engage a number of beneficial therapy modalities including: crisis intervention, psychoeducation, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic narrative, guided imagery and critical stress debriefing. Due to the high prevalance of cooccurence specifically anxiety, sleep disturbance and depression, integrative therapy modalities are employed. Every session utilizes Carl Rogers' famous client centered model and places priority on establishing a warm, safe, empathic environment conducive to achieving favorable outcomes and restoration.

In my experience, I have noted there are many factors contributing to depression. Depression manifests physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or in any combination of these. Sometimes treatment involves a combination of medication and counseling interventions. However, because of the intricacies of depression, what works for one person may not prove effective for someone else. Sometimes relief is a matter of trial and error until that effective combination of interventions is identified.

Depression is a debilitating condition that can be either situational and other times genetically driven despite your external world. Things can appear great on the outside and you may feel you do not have any "reasons" to feel bad, yet you still do! At KML, we do not judge people for having depression. We understand that much of this is beyond your immediate control! And yet, it is the positive thing is that depression is treatable and life can improve! We teach DBT, CBT restructuring, cognitive appraisal strategies and other techniques to help you make immediate change. We are here to support you at your worst and help you be your best through person-centered work! You CAN do this!

Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. Many people feel they may be "depressed" and therefore seek out the assistance of a therapist. First we must determine if you have a clinical depression. The term depression is used widely but often an individual is just feeling sad about an event and does not have a true clinical depression. This will involve a thorough assessment. Your concerns will be the focus of therapy. We may include your family and/or friends as needed. Recommending medication is never my first choice, but in some cases, a referral to your Primary Care Physician or a Psychiatrist for medication evaluation may be helpful to take the edge off of symptoms so you can work more effectively in session.
