My approach to counseling with children is to work collaboratively with the parents. counseling with children is part of a family systems approach. Children do not develop struggles in a vacuum so working with the parents and the rest of the family as needed is of added benefit to the child in therapy, regardless of the age of the minor child involved. Therapy may be weekly or every other week, as needed and determined when we develop the treatment plan.

Children often express their experiences and feelings through play, and this becomes an important tool for learning about themselves and others. Children often express and resolve inner conflicts through their play. The therapist helps the child to express and understand the world through play activities - sometimes acting out conflicts and feelings, then interpreting (as appropriate to age) how a similar issue or feeling is present in the child's life.

Our time together is an opportunity to explore strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and desires. Together, we will work to process aspects of your life that may be causing discomfort, frustration, anxiety, depression, or even simply an overall feeling of being overwhelmed. With time and commitment, we can restore a sense of balance and personal confidence, even though it may feel like life is giving you the opposite. My hope for you is that you find security and optimism knowing that we each have the power from within to make each day a better day.

Young children will sometimes feel a ball of emotions and not understand how to navigate the outlet. Together we can help your child work through the life changes they may be experiencing. Certain changes (i.e., divorce, a big move, new addition the family, etc.) can cause children to act out due to being unable to express themselves productively. We will work together to help your child navigate their life changes, decrease unwanted behaviors, and engage in effective communication to move forward productively.
