In my work with families I use a strong solution focused approach. Often difficulties arise in families when communication is poor or ineffective. I work with families to help them develop respectful ways of communicating with each other. As well, understanding boundaries in family units appears to present challenges. Family members need to learn how to interact with each other in a caring respectful manner.

Communication and role expectations are very important to family functioning. My approach with family therapy is focus on definition of the problem and how the family as a whole is affected. I focus on improving communication and how relationships function in the family. At times it may be necessary to provide individual counseling with family members if there are individual issues which are affecting the person and the family.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently dysregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Many times the emotional trauma created by years of solving problems ineffectively can wreak havoc on the brain's parasympathetic nervous system, not ever giving the family a break from flight or fight thinking.
